I was reading this in an article today. It's exactly what I was saying a couple years ago about moral relativism i.e. people losing their moral certitude and not calling a "spade a spade". It also touches on what I've been saying about virtues being redefined.

It's not all bad news, to be sure. The elite minority's general acceptance of racial and sexual equality as important values has been a moral triumph. But not without costs. As part of this transformation, society has embraced what social scientist Charles Murray calls "ecumenical niceness." A core tenet of ecumenical niceness is that harsh judgments of the underclass — or people with underclass values — are forbidden. An added corollary: People with old-fashioned notions of decency are fair game.

Long before the rise of reality shows, ecumenical niceness created a moral vacuum. Out-of-wedlock birth was once a great shame; now it's something of a happy lifestyle choice. The cavalier use of profanity was once crude; now it's increasingly conversational. Self-discipline was once a virtue; now self-expression is king.

Thoughts on land management

I like this blog and the author's thoughtful posts on land management and restoration. I'm not as much of a flower aficionado, but it definitely provides food for thought.

Freakin' Democrats

Our poor country. If you're like me, and have been wondering what happened to our country. Well, I'll tell you. The damn democrats and their willingness to sell out everything we hold dear to get votes are selling us down the drain. Watch this video and weep.

Difference between Conservative and liberal

How you feel about this statement says a lot about whether you are conservative or liberal in your thinking. It says whether you are a religionist or a humanist, a utopian or republican.

There is no end to how far the facist greens will go to invade your private life. As evidence, check the headline below. The full article is here

American taste for soft toilet roll 'worse than driving Hummers'. Extra-soft, quilted and multi-ply toilet roll made from virgin forest causes more damage than gas-guzzlers, fast food or McMansions, say campaigners

Great painting

I have always liked this painting, but didn't realize that it was of John Brown until today. Knowing that adds a whole new dimension. Suddenly his pose makes sense and he changes from a crazed looking messiah to a martyr in the pose of a cross, or is he a crazed messiah? I could look at it for hours, wondering which it is. That's what's interesting about it. There is so much information packed into the images that it takes a lot of understanding and knowledge to appreciate the symbolism. Weird how a little bit of information can totally change how you look at something.

Time-Picayune - Letter to the Editor

We had such a fun time in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl that I decided to write a letter to the editor thanking the city for a great time.

Here's the text in case the link disappears.

Utah fans are bowled over

I would like to congratulate and thank the city of New Orleans for providing us a great experience during our recent visit to watch the Sugar Bowl.

Four of us converged on New Orleans from points across the country. We were very impressed by the variety of experiences, from great restaurants, to excellent music, to an intriguing atmosphere.

However, we were most impressed by the friendliness of your city. We were treated well by smiling, friendly people across the city from the French Quarter to the Garden District.

We are looking forward to our next visit. Go Utes!
